The above-linked information is our attempt at assembling ammonia-refrigeration ITM practices based on what we have read, seen, and heard. It is not entirely applicable to many ammonia-refrigeration systems.
The above-linked information is provided for free, as is. Use at your own risk. Absolutely no warranty.
Electrical, fire-prevention, and building codes ITM are outside the scope of the above-linked task lists.
Change Log:
2022-07-11 -- in the Insulation, Paint, and Underlying Steel Sub-practice, added "welds" to examples of areas that may have additional stresses and so require API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-For-Service evaluation methods that are not covered in IIAR 6-2019.
2021-10-04 -- added detail to daily inspection (all optional: compressor suction temperature, more condenser parameters, more detail on motor run hours and lubricating oil added) and clarified "inspect/note/fix" definition.
2021-08-16 -- added detail to daily inspection (compressor oil, capacity indicators, secondary coolant checks, outdoor temperature), added extra LOTO reminder to ventilation fan inspection, and clarified wording.
2021-06-03 -- for compressors and pumps, added detail on oil circuit, oil cooling, and any economizers, and clarified wording.
2021-05-26 -- for recip compressors, added loss-of-cooling safety shutoff option and some details on internal inspections. Added inspecting suction screens.
2021-04-02 -- added reasonable deviations from ITM frequencies, verifying that compressor check valves are holding, liquid heaters, and auto-King valve testing. Detailed and clarified compressor ITM, vibration analysis, and ammonia-inventory monitoring.
2020-11-17 -- (1) added check valves under insulation to yearly labels inspection, and (2) clarified replacement-in-kind guidance.
2020-09-11 -- (1) added detail on vapor stops in insulation, (2) noted that IIAR 6-2019 does not include the limitations of the API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 methods it simplifies, and (3) added ASME PCC-2 information.
2020-08-27 -- wording clarifications: "system-opening" instead of "line-breaking" and "piping-opening", "self-closing" instead of "spring-closing" valve, see details on GitHub.
2020-07-30 to 2020-07-16 -- clarifications, adding details, and typo fixes.
2020-07-15 -- reformatted as task lists for the PSM-CAP App compliance practices and revised after publication of IIAR 2 (2019 Addendum), IIAR 6-2019, and IIAR 9-2020. The prior tabular version is linked here https://factplusfancy.com/armp2012to2019
2017-12-29 -- added additional checks on pipe & component markers (labels) and valve tags. Clarified water-content analysis frequency.
2016-04-26 -- Added guards, noise, and vibration checks for rotating equipment. Added more detail for all fans. Added test of low-oil shutoff switch for pumps with mechanical seals. Added signs for refrigerating-machinery rooms. Add air-flow patterns to emergency-ventilation air-flow check. Added auto-purger maintenance. Added access-hatch bolts check and more detail on typical manufacturer recommendations for compressors. Added water leaks and ice checks for evaporative condensers. Added water-strainer cleaning to evaporative condenser water treatment. Added detail on addressing damaged insulation. Renamed and added detail to liquid-level shutoff testing (had been called high-level shutoff switches). Revised sight glasses. Clarified that internal erosion more likely from liquid and wet suction. Added seismic considerations and also adequacy and condition of pressure relief, guarding, and access to independent full inspection. Added replace if valve opens to pressure-relief valves. Terminology: changed shutoff valve to stop valve.
